COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Former two-term Attorney General Henry McMaster is in a runoff race in two weeks to be South Carolina's next lieutenant governor.
Early returns show McMaster with 44 percent of the vote, putting him in the lead by a margin of 20 percentage points. The second-place winner was too close to call between retired Kiawah Island developer Pat McKinney and Mike Campbell, the son of the late Gov. Carroll Campbell.
McMaster and his opponent will square off June 24.
The state's No. 2 post will soon be vacated by Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, whose new job as president of the College of Charleston starts July 1.
The primary winner faces Democratic state Rep. Bakari Sellers in November. Sellers had no primary opponent.
