Midlands bikers hit the road for veterans
IRMO, S.C. (WACH) – Midlands bikers met at the Harley Haven in Irmo Sunday morning in honor of U.S. veterans.
They met as part of the Patriot Tour, a crusade to honor and raise funds for veterans, past and present, and their families. As part of the tour, a single American flag is carried across the continental U.S. to each of the 48 states, with bikers from each respective state carrying it over into the next.
The bikers set out at 8 a.m. and headed to Conyers, GA where a new group will accept the flag in a receiving ceremony.
The carrier of the flag this year was 94-year-old Bernie Shankman, a retired WWII veteran who has been riding since he was 16-years-old.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” said Shankman. “The freedom and the camaraderie will all the members of the club—it’s just a lot of fun.”
Shankman says he is humbled to be chosen to carry the flag and will do so to honor veterans and their service everywhere.
“It’s a feeling of pride for the country,” he said, adding, “And our freedom. And what we all fought for.”
The group arrived in Georgia around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
