Midlands high school fight caught on camera, one arrested
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – A video of a Midlands high school fight has gone viral and parents say it’s raising some serious questions.
Deputies arrested 17-year-old Deshaan Sims last week after they say he made a threat on Facebook to shoot up Lower Richland High School.
A woman claiming to be Sims’ mother took to Facebook, saying a fight and bullying of his sister at school may have prompted the threat.
The video was posted to Facebook by a woman claiming to be the mother of one of the girls. In the post, the mother says, “God has allowed me to cry over it long enough, so now it’s time to take action. Now, just as fast as you all shared his post, share my post.”
The mother also claims deputies arrested her son after he responded to what he saw in the video.
Richland School District One did respond to the incident, saying:
"ON NOVEMBER 28, RICHLAND ONE WAS NOTIFIED THAT A THREAT HAD BEEN MADE AGAINST LOWER RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL BY AN UNKNOWN PERSON VIA SOCIAL MEDIA. ON NOVEMBER 29, THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCED THAT AN ARREST HAD BEEN MADE AND THAT A SUSPECT WAS IN CUSTODY..."
The mother did go on record, however, condemning the threats that were made, but said she understands her son’s frustration.
Sims has been charged with unlawful communication.
