ELGIN, S.C. (AP) -- Kershaw County authorities say an autistic teen-ager drowned in a swimming pool near the school where he lived.
Sheriff Jim Matthews says the 15-year-old boy was reported missing from Pine Grove school about 5:30 a.m. Friday. Around that time, deputies also received a call about a burglary at a home near the residential school in Elgin for students with developmental disabilities.
The resident discovered the teen's body about six hours later.
Matthews says the teen was already dead. He says one of his deputies searched the pool area hours earlier.
The teen had climbed over a chain-link fence.
The school reported him missing after a door alarm indicated he'd walked away.
Officers from several area departments as well as the State Law Enforcement Division had been searching for him.
