Motorcyclist falls 75 feet from I-26 overpass during wreck
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A motorcyclist has been hospitalized with injuries that reportedly are not life-threatening after police say he fell 75 feet from an Interstate 26 overpass as a result of a wreck in Charleston early Friday morning.
The wreck happened shortly before 2:45 a.m. near the Cypress Street overpass on I-26 westbound, says Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis.
Once on scene, Francis says officers found the motorcycle damaged and lying against the retaining wall in the far right lane. The driver was nowhere to be seen, however.
Officers searched the area, discovering the driver had been thrown over the retaining wall, landing in a fenced in area of the Parks Department property at 823 Meeting St., some 75 feet below, according to Francis.
Rescuers with the Charleston Fire Department arrived and cut the rear gate lock off the fence to get to the driver. Francis says the driver was conscious when first responders got to him and was taken to MUSC for treatment of his injuries.
