According to the Columbia Fire Department the gas line broke between Assembly Street and Main Street at approximately 8:30 Friday morning. Fire crews temporarly sheltered workers in place in 3 different buildings on Lady Street and evacuatetd Moe Levy's. SCE&G shut off the gas line. Crews will remain on scene to monitor the area. The 1100 block of Lady Street reopened for traffic at about 11:00 a.m. Friday. This is the second downtown gas leak in as many weeks. Last Wednesday a natural gas line break at the corner of Richland and Sumter streets shut down several streets after the leak sparked a fire. That leak left 150 SCE&G customers without gas for several hours.
