Newberry County Sheriff's Office receives grant for body cams
NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WACH) - After numerous requests from Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster for his agency to get body cameras, that request has been granted.
The Newberry County Sheriff's Office has received $118,000 from the state to supply its deputies with body cameras.
Sheriff Foster said his agency was one in the first in the country to test the equipment and provided feedback to the National Institute of Justice.
Foster was also heavily involved in pushing a body cam legislation into law in South Carolina.
"We have an open door police of communication with our citizens. We believe that we go above and beyond to keep the community informed and involved because our partnership is what makes us so effective. We believe that these cameras will add an extra layer of protection for our citizens and our officers," said Sheriff Foster.
The sheriff added that the most expensive "piece of the puzzle" with the body cameras is the gathering and storing of the technology.
Foster said the next step is to meet with prospective vendors, followed by a bidding process and finally the implementation of the cameras.
