Newberry police charge 2 with killing Chapin man

NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) -- Newberry County deputies have charged two people with murder in the death of a man whose body was found last month on a remote gravel road in the Sumter National Forest.

Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said 43-year-old John Henry Mayers of Chapin died after being shot twice in the chest.

Investigators say Mayers was shot and killed May 7 by his girlfriend of nearly 20 years and her roommate who live in Newberry. His body was found May 25 and was so decomposed that officials had to use DNA to positively identify the body.

Deputies charged 34-year-old Mandy Smith and 30-year-old Timothy Carroll Wise with murder. The two were in the Newberry County jail awaiting bail hearings. Sheriff's spokesman Todd Johnson said Saturday he doesn't think they have attorneys.
