Officials at the Riverbanks Zoo say a baby baboon has died after being attacked by its father shortly after birth.
The birth and attack happened within public view at the exhibit Monday afternoon.
Zoo staff was observing the newborn Hamadryas baboon when they witnessed the father, Makale, attack his offspring 15 minutes after birth.
Veterinary staff quickly removed the infant, but it later died at the animal hospital.
Mammal curator John Davis says about 50 people were watching.
He says male baboons sometimes kill the offspring of rivals, but there was only one male at the exhibit..
The mother, Imi, is under keeper observation and the zoo says she appears to be normal.
