Not all council members for police consolidation

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- When it comes to a city/county consolidation of the police force, not all members of Columbia City Council are for the proposal.

At Wednesday's meeting, council members noted who is for and against the idea of letting Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott run the city's police department.

According to the State newspaper, Mayor Steve Benjamin, Belinda Gergel, Leona Plaugh and Daniel Rickenmann are in favor of the proposal.

Tameika Isaac Devine, Sam Davis and Brian Newman are against the proposal.

The city council is expected to vote on the issue on September 29.

Also, as a reminder, council meetings will soon be held at night.

Starting October 19, council will meet the first and third Tuesday evenings each month at 6 p.m.

This was something Mayor Benjamin promised when campaigning in order to get higher attendance.
