Columbia (WACH) -- November 14th is a very important day for millions of people across the world.
It`s known as World Diabetes Day, in honor of Dr. Frederick Banting who discovered life saving insulin in 1922.
In South Carolina the day was recognized at the State House by Governor Nikki Haley.
Governor Haley signed a proclamation recognizing the importance of World Diabetes Day, and the need to find a cure for the disease.
Dozens of members of JDRF Palmetto, from across the state, came to Columbia today to attend the signing.
While the development and advancement with insulin and treatment of diabetes has come a long way since 1922, it is by no means a cure.
Diabetics view insulin as â??life support,â?? because without it the disease can be deadly.
WACH Fox is a proud sponsor of JDRF, and was the only television station allowed to cover the proclamation signing.
