Officer collapses at SC gubernatorial inauguration

A state law officer on duty at the inauguration of South Carolina Gov.-elect Nikki Haley collapsed during the procession of dignitaries down the Statehouse steps.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A state law officer collapsed while on duty for Nikki Haley's inauguration as South Carolina governor.

Public Safety Department spokesman Sid Gaulden said Wednesday that 44-year-old Lance Cpl. P.G. Gullett of the State Transport Police was taken to a local hospital after emergency medical workers removed him from the Statehouse steps on a stretcher.

Gaulden said he didn't know what caused the 21-year veteran to collapse during a procession of dignitaries down the Statehouse steps. Gaulden says the officer was going to be kept at the hospital overnight for observation.

The ceremony was interrupted for about 15 minutes. It resumed with the announcer asking for a moment of silence, followed by a statement that the officer was OK.
