One dead in Granby Oaks Apartment fire

Fire engulfs Grandby Oaks Apartments in West Columbia Thursday evening

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) -- Fire crews were continuing to clean up after a deadly fire Thursday night an apartment complex in West Columbia.

Capt. Shane Phillips with the West Columbia Police Department has confirmed one person died in the fire.

At least eight units were destroyed in the fire according to Capt. Phillips. Other units may have slight damage from the intense heat and smoke from the fire.

The fire started shortly after 8 p.m. at the Granby Oaks Apartments on State St. near Knox Abbott Dr. The apartments are located right across from the Bi-Lo store in that area.

Witnesses tell WACH FOX News about a dozen fire trucks from West Columbia, Columbia and Cayce are on the scene.

The Red Cross and other victims assistance agencies were on hand to help those displaced by the fire.

The Red Cross says they are providing the residents with temporary lodging in a nearby hotel, financial assistance to purchase food, clothing and other emergency item, as well as emotional counseling, if needed.
