Operation Spread The Joy
Chapin, S.C. (WACH) - Operation Spread The Joy (OSJ) is an organization that is dedicated to giving back to those in need.
Heather Malovic founded this group seven years ago when she realized there was extreme need of resources for the homeless population in the capital city.
OSJ collects donations in monetary and supply form. They then pack about 150 bags to hand out to homeless people on Christmas and Mother's Day.
The bags are full of deodorant, socks, underwear, female sanitation items, chapsticks, snacks, and other essential survival items.
This organization works hard to dispel the misconceptions of homelessness.
Malovic says, "every homeless person has their own story. Not everyone is the stereotypical you know drug addict or alcoholic or lazy."
This year OSJ is hoping to reach more that 150 people. With Mother's Day being right around the corner, Malovic will continue to celebrate this day by giving back.
This community effort is what Malovic says is essential to changing the stigma and issues communities have with homelessness.
"We can't be in our own little bubble and expect the community to be a better place. We have to be a part of that for it to change," said Malovic.
Operation Spread the Joy is accepting donations until Mother's Day. There are two drop-off locations:
Debi & Co. Hair Studio - 2401 Dutch Fork Rd in Chapin or Salon Bella - 4711 Forest Drive in Columbia.
The organization is still in need of Smuckers Uncrustables, hygiene wipes, razors, ponchos, and underwear.
