COLUMBIA (WACH) - A demonstration by individuals with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals took place in Columbia Friday to help promote getting animals spayed or neutered.
Participants in the demonstration dressed up as condoms to remind people to have their pets spayed or neutered to cut down on the number of unwanted animals filling animal shelters.
"We're using our dancing condoms to encourage people to spay and neuter their animal companions," said one participant. "They're about 8 million unwanted animals being dumped into our shelters every year, and about half of them have to be euthanized because we don't have room for them."
PETA says just one unspayed dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in six years.
The group says an unspayed cat and its offspring can produce more than 400,000 cats in seven years.
