Police make arrests in Columbia bakery killing

Police have arrested and charged Troy Stevenson, and Lorenzo Young, both 18, in the shooting death of Kelly Hunnewell.

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Columbia police say they have arrested three suspects in last week's shooting death of a 33-year-old woman at a bakery.

Police have arrested and charged Troy Stevenson, 18, Lorenzo Young, 18, and a 16-year-old suspect in the death of Kelly Hunnewell.

Investigators say Hunnewell was working in the bakery around 3:30 a.m. July 1 when Stevenson and Young came in with guns. Police say one of them shot Hunnewell in the chest and they quickly left.

Police say the 16-year-old stayed outside the bakery door, serving as a "look-out" while the other two attempted to rob the business.

Police say the two older suspects are documented gang members. The younger suspect is a relative of one of the suspects.

All three suspects are being charged with murder, kidnapping, attempted armed robbery, second degree burglary and criminal conspiracy. The two adult suspects are also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

Police say all three suspects will be tried as adults.

Columbia Interim Police Chief Ruben Santiago sees this as a "heinous" crime that has destroyed a family.

"We wanna make sure that anything that we can do from a police department standpoint, that we're going to do to make sure they know that we support them," said Santiago last week.

According to Columbia Police Hunnewell's four children were aged five to thirteen.

The bakery made food for a downtown Columbia restaurant.

Authorities say Hunnewell was working early in the morning so she could spend more time with her four children.
