COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Providence Hospitals are hoping to help save young athletes lives with a quick five minute test.
Hospital officials say while the test won't detect all heart problems, it is still important to screen young adults.
The screenings, which are not offered in typical athletic physicals, test for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). The hospital says HCM the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes - responsible for 36 percent of deaths in young athletes, and 90 percent of these deaths occur during athletic activities.
The hospital is offering the screenings Thursday, May 27 from 5:30pm to 8:30 pm at Providence Hospital Northeast. The test costs $50.
