      Put down the twinkie for National Healthy Eating Day

      American Heart Assocation celebrates November 6th as National Healthy Eating Day.

      COLUMBIA (WACH)-The American Heart Association celebrates National Healthy Eating Day as its call-to-action for the community to kick -off a healthy eating routine.

      According to the American Heart Association, 68 percent of adults and 33 percent of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese.Held the first Wednesday of November, companies turn off their vending machines or encourage their employees to bring healthy food for a company potluck or lunch and learn.

      On National Healthy Eating Day, local leaders are heading back into the classroom in an effort to inspire students to be healthy and active, everyday. The new program "Fit for Life" created by SUBWAY and national spokesperson Jared Fogle has recruited these leaders as "Fit Buddies" to help his fight against childhood obesity.

      WACH Fox's Janet Parker, Brian McConchie, Tyler Ryan and Bree Boyce will be participating as Fit Buddies for schools in the Midlands.

      Beginning National Eating Healthy Day and continuing until Thanksgiving, 6,500 students in classrooms across the Midlands will begin tracking their healthy eating and physical activity choices. Over 50,000 students in the Carolinas region are participating in the challenge.
