COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - The U.S. Geological Survey has reported a 4.1 magnitude earthquake Friday night centered seven miles west-northwest of Edgefield.
The quake was felt throughout South Carolina and Georgia, according to social media chatter and reports to the WACH Fox newsroom.
The quake hit at 10:23 pm.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, moderately damaging earthquakes occur in the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once every year or two.
A 4.0 magnitude quake can be felt as far as 60 miles away from the quake's center and infrequently causes damage near its source, according to USGS statistics. Reports in to the WACH Fox newsroom indicate people felt the quake in Greenville and as far away as Savannah, Ga.
