Retired military dog sniffs out the competition, headed to Hollywood

Gabe is in the running for the 2012 Hero Dog award.

FORT JACKSON (WACH) -- A hero dog from the Midlands is Hollywood bound.

After months of voting, retired military dog Gabe won the military category in the 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards.

Gabe now moves on to the finals and will compete against seven other dogs for overall bragging rights.

The competition recognizes ordinary dogs that do extraordinary things.

Gabe and his owner, Sergeant First Class Charles Shuck, deployed to Iraq together and worked to sniff out weapons and other dangerous items.

The two will be flown to Los Angeles in October for the competitionâ??s awards ceremony. There, Gabe will receive his award as the 2012 Military Hero Dog and possibly, the all-around winner.

The voting continues though October 5. You can vote once a day.

Gabe is competing for the United States War Dog Association, Inc., a nonprofit organization of former and current U.S. Military Dog handlers and supporting members committed to promoting the long history of military service dogs.
