COLUMBIA (WACH) - A City of Columbia Police officer is in trouble with the law after Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said he was charged with DUI early Saturday morning at 3:45 a.m. at the intersection of Huger and Whaley Streets.

Lott said a deputy from the Sheriff Department's Traffic Safety Unit saw a Green GMC vehicle driving erratically. The officer stopped the driver, Steven Joshua White, 30, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. White handed the deputy his license and CPD identification. The officer found an open container of alcohol. White told the officer he'd had four drinks since about 7:00 that night. The deputy asked White to take a field sobriety test, which he refused. The deputy walked around his SUV to the back.

An incident report issued by the Sheriff's Department said the deputy searched White's vehicle and found an open mini-bottle of vodka, along with a cup with a drink containing alcohol. The arresting deputy found another open bottle of liquor in the back floor board of the SUV.

White was booked and sent to the Alvin S. Glenn detention center. Columbia Police spokesperson Jennifer Timmons said White is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.
