Paul Allen Derrick

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)- Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott dismissed a deputy charged with assault by the Columbia Police after he tried to arrest a woman at a Devine Street restaurant Monday.

Paul Allen Derrick, a 14-year veteran of the Richland County Sheriff's Department, was arrested Monday after a woman accused him of slamming her head onto a metal table while trying to put her in handcuffs.

It remains unclear why Derrick was trying to cuff the woman.

Richland County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Curtis Wilson confirmed Derrick was terminated Tuesday. He declined to give any details about the termination other than to say Sheriff Leon Lott will address the termination Wednesday afternoon.
