COLUMBIA (WACH) - Corporal Ken Proffitt has been fired from the Richland County Sheriff's Department after he caused a car accident Friday night. The South Carolina Highway Patrol charged Proffitt with disregarding a traffic signal, which led to him hitting 22 year old Katie Miles. Miles was treated for scratches and bruises after the accident.
Proffitt claimed he had the green light at the time of the accident, but video obtained by the Highway Patrol showed that was untrue. Proffitt was not responding to a call at the time of the accident, so his blue lights were not on and his dash-cam was not turned on.
Today, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott publicly apologized for Proffitt's actions and said the accident was completely Proffitt's fault. This was the third at-fault accident Proffitt has been involved in aince 2012. Proffitt was placed on a 180 day probation this April after his second accident.
Lott says Proffitt was terminated Tuesday after it was determined he was in violation of the Sheriff Department's policy concerning at-fault traffic accidents.
