Columbia,SC (WACH) - A new restaurant is coming to Richland Mall and local officials hope it will help lead to bigger things.
Mall executives announced Thursday that Sadieâ??s Cafeteria will open in May. Local restauranteur David Martin has named the eatery after his grandmother, Sadie Tronco, who started the family's restaurant business in Columbia over 70 years ago.
â??Itâ??s all about coming back,"said Martin. "We just moved our family back to Forest Acres where we grew up and we are just proud to be a part of the mall that we all grew up in.â??
The new eatery will fill the spot vacated by the popular S&S Cafeteria which left the mall last year and will serve a similar menu. Since S&S left residents have questioned if a similar business would take its place and what could be done to revitalize the commercial center.
In recent years, the Richland Mall has seen new owners and management. Development plans for the property have sputtered leaving many empty store fronts and opportunity for a rebirth.
â??The cafeteria brings a lot to the table for the development of the mall,â?? said Forest Acres Mayor Frank Brunson.
Martin expects to employ 50 people and will serve all American-style dishes. Former S&S workers will be part of the staff. Sadieâ??s American Cafeteria will open May 1.
