River rescue teams searching for man floating down river

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The Columbia Fire Department water rescue team, the Department of Natural Resources, Richland County Sheriff Deputies and their dive team are searching for a man floating down the Broad River.

According to Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins a river rescue team is searching the river near River Drive and Bentley Drive.

Richland County Sheriff's Department Captain Chris Cowan says a black male jumped out of a burgundy SUV.

"The river is pretty swift today, these waters aren't safe for anyone to be in them right now," says Cowan.

Cowan says papers and documents were found inside of the SUV that identify someone but he can not link them to jumper until he is rescued from the river. He credits the quick response to crews already being in the area after a previous incident.
