Runners brave the nasty weather for a meaningful 5K

COLUMBIA (WACH) - Some dedicated runners and walkers came out Saturday for the Martin Luther King Jr. 5K run and fitness walk.

This is the 24th year the run has been done.

The course wound through the Shandon neighborhood area.

And it turns out the race was not only fun, it had a lot of meaning as well.

"This is a celebration of Dr. King's legacy and birthday and it's also a fundraiser for community organizations." says Willie Odom, the race director.

Those organizations are the March of Dimes, Martin Luther King memorial foundation, and the Alpha Academy.

The Alpha Academy is a mentoring group sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha.
