NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WACH/AP) -- Authorities say the mayor of Saluda killed himself the same day a newspaper published a report questioning almost $38,000 in mileage reimbursements he received from the town.
Frank Addy Jr., 58, was found dead Sunday morning from a gunshot to the head at his family's Lake Greenwood home. The Newberry County coroner ruled his death a suicide.
A story published by The Index-Journal of Greenwood said several companies and organizations Addy claimed mileage to visit had no record of meeting with him.
Addy claimed he drove more than 48,000 miles in 2012 for economic development for Saluda.
Addy refused to talk to the newspaper several times, saying he wasn't feeling well. He then told the newspaper he would wait until a State Law Enforcement Division investigation into the reimbursements was finished.
Tom Brooks, with the town of Saluda, said all of (the Town's) thoughts and prayers are with the Addy family and said the town is "taking it one day at a time while dealing with this tragedy."
Brooks said the town is looking into the allegations made by the Index-Journal, Brooks said it's an ongoing process and made no further comment.
In the meantime, Saluda Council Pro-Tem Annissa Turner will serve as acting Mayor until an election can be held to elect Addy's replacement.
