SC base honors commander who helped bring C-17s

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A former commander at the Charleston Air Force Base is being honored with a run along the runway at Joint Base Charleston.

The Wednesday 5-K run at the base is in memory of Brig. Gen. Thomas Mikolajcik who died last April after battling Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Mikolajcik was the active duty wing commander at the base from July 1991 through June 1994. He was key in getting C-17 transport jets assigned to Charleston.
