COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Lawyers for a South Carolina man on death row for killing two police officers say his sentence should be overturned because prosecutors showed scenes from an officer's funeral at the trial.
Attorneys for 42-year-old Steven Bixby argued his appeal before the state Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Authorities say Bixby and his parents became angry and the men attacked the officers in 2003 after highway workers put survey stakes in their yard in Abbeville as they began a road-widening project.
Bixby's lawyers also say an expert on title searches should have been allowed to testify about how hard it would have been to find the highway department's right of way.
Bixby's father is indefinitely committed to a mental institution and Bixby's mother is serving a life prison sentence.
