SC Gov Haley: Finish work on ethics bill this year

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Gov. Nikki Haley is calling on legislators to get a bill strengthening the state's weak ethics laws to her desk.
The Republican governor said Tuesday residents deserve ethics reform this year. She was surrounded by 14 Republican senators and the current and former attorneys general.
Attorney General Alan Wilson says if legislators can't finish their work, they're sending a signal that ethics reform isn't important to them.
Democratic Sen. Brad Hutto says Democrats support ethics reform and aren't holding up anything. He notes the Senate Judiciary Committee only recently advanced the bill.
But Hutto says Haley can't lead on ethics reform, since she's the reason for the effort. The House Ethics Committee twice cleared her of accusations last year -- the second time citing ambiguity in the law.
