COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The House Ethics Committee has asked for more employment information from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley before deciding whether to reopen an ethics complaint against her.
However, committee members were unaware Wednesday of the request until an Associated Press reporter asked them about it.
Chairman Roland Smith said later that staff attorneys decided to seek the same information from both previous employers named in an ethics complaint. The committee voted last Friday to ask Haley and Lexington Medical Center for documentation concerning her job as its fundraiser. Members specifically said they weren't seeking anything regarding her consulting job for engineering firm Wilbur Smith.
But staff called Haley back on Monday asking for documentation on her employment there.
Smith says staff anticipated future questions.
Haley has until noon Friday to respond.
