UNION, S.C. (AP) -- One of South Carolina's most infamous lakes is closing for two years.
The Department of Natural Resources says John D. Long Lake in Union County has become overpopulated with bass, which is hurting the bream in the lake.
DNR says efforts to fix the problem have failed, so wildlife officials decided to draw down the lake and remove the fish. The lake will be refilled, other work will be done, and bream and bass will be put back in.
Wildlife officials plan to reopen the lake in two years.
Susan Smith killed her two children by rolling her car into the lake in October 1994. Seven people visiting the lake less than two years later for a memorial drowned when their van rolled into the water.
