SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- A Spartanburg mother has been sentenced to 13 years in prison in the death of her 7-year-old daughter, who was thrown from a sport utility vehicle following a high-speed chase on Interstate 85.
Solicitor Barry Barnette says 27-year-old Errika Shelton was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges including reckless homicide and child neglect.
Authorities said Shelton lost control of her SUV in August 2012 after refusing to stop for deputies. The car slid across several lanes of traffic, struck a median and flipped several times.
Shelton's daughter, Queniya, and a bag of marijuana were thrown from the SUV, and more drugs were found inside the wrecked vehicle. The girl died at a hospital.
