GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Organizers say a Republican presidential candidates' debate planned in California has been postponed for lack of participation, making South Carolina's debate in May the first of the 2012 contest.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation said Wednesday that too few candidates had committed to a May 2 debate held along with NBC News and Politico. The event is being shifted to Sept. 14.
Many Republican contenders have yet to formally commit to enter the presidential race. Some potential candidates have said they will not reveal decisions before this summer.
South Carolina GOP executive director Joel Sawyer said candidates have informally committed to the Fox News debate planned for Greenville on May 5. He said there are no plans to delay that event.
