SC teacher seeks pretrial program in assault case

A third-grade teacher from Rock Hill charged with assaulting a 9-year-old student by grabbing her arm and leaving a bruise is asking to enter a pretrial intervention program.

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- A third-grade teacher from Rock Hill charged with assaulting a 9-year-old student by grabbing her arm and leaving a bruise is asking to enter a pretrial intervention program.

Daniel Johns told a judge Wednesday that he has asked to enter the program, which would involve counseling and community service in exchange for expunging the charge from his record.

Johns was arrested last month after authorities said he grabbed a student at Rosewood Elementary School while on hall duty and pulled her by the arm to speak with her.

The 35-year-old educator has been teaching for more than 10 years.
