COLUMBIA (WACH) - South Carolina Highway Patrol has identiied the driver who struck and killed a SCDOT worker, as 39 year old Thomas Stafford.
A South Carolina Department of Transportation worker was hit by a vehicle on I-20 Monday afternoon.
According to the Highway Patrol Website and SCHP spokesman Trooper Brent Kelly, a department of transportation worker was hit and killed along I-20 at mile marker 63 near the Bush River Road interchange westbound about 1:35 pm.
Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman identified the worker as 21-year-old Nicholas Johnson of Columbia. Harman says Johnson was working in the emergency lane of the interstate when he was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene from severe head and body trauma.
The vehicle that hit the worker left the scene, but the Highway Patrol stopped the vehicle further down I-20.
The Highway Patrol arrested the driver. Charges are pending.
