SC's Fort Jackson hosts weekend Special Olympics

FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) -- Fort Jackson is playing host to two days of Special Olympics competition in swimming, softball and bowling.
The largest training site in the Army expects more than 1,200 athletes, coaches and supporters for the event beginning Friday evening. Torch bearers are running a 7-mile course from the Statehouse in downtown Columbia to Fort Jackson for the opening ceremony of the 2013 summer games.
Competition begins Saturday morning with swimming events at the Knight Pool, softball at Hilton Field and bowling at the installation's two bowling centers.
All events are free and open to the public. Drivers entering the installation must present a valid driver's license.
