Shaw AFB opens first nursing center in South Carolina

Shaw Third Army leaders officially opened the Third Army Nursing Center; also known as TANC.

SHAW AFB, SC (WACH)--Military mothers at Shaw Air Force Base are getting help from a brand new nursing center.

Shaw Third Army leaders officially opened the Third Army Nursing Center; also known as TANC. The TANC is the first nursing center on a South Carolina military base.

It will be a private area for moms while at work to take care of babies and breastfeed them. The room is equipped with a microwave, fridge, and better ways to sanitize funnels and bottles.

Cpt. Joy Byer is eight months pregnant; and said the room could not come at a better time.

"It shows the Army is moving toward a more inclusive forum to where women are included," Byer said. "We need facilities such as this. And having a room such as the TANC allows us to do our duty on the military side as well as mothers."

Currently, Third Army officials say they have eight military pregnant soldiers and three civilians pregnant. There are about 200 women stationed at Shaw.
