SLED investigating after officer involved shooting during inmate escape
DARLINGTON, SC (WACH) – Agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are continuing to investigate an officer involved shooting incident.
According to the department, an inmate briefly escaped the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center Saturday night in Darlington. The inmate was being discharged from the Carolina Pines Hospital in Hartsville when the escape took place.
One detention officer fired his weapon but no one was injured. The inmate was recaptured shortly after escaping.
It’s normal procedure for SLED to investigate officer involved shootings when requested by the agencies involved in the incident.
Any information gathered in Darlington County will then be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
The incident was the 21st officer involved shooting in the state in 2017 and the first this year involving a detention center officer of the Darling County Sheriff’s Office.
