HARBISON STATE FOREST, SC (WACH) -- The SC Forestry Dept. issued a prescribed burn Friday, engulfing 30 acres of Harbison State Forest in flames.
Forestry officials say controlled burns are among the best ways to prevent a wild fire.
"A prescribed fire is kind of like a doctor writing a prescription," said Scott Hawkins with the SC Forestry Dept. "A forester makes a decision that for the health of this forest we're going to burn off the undergrowth so that we don't have a heavy fuel load if a wildfire happens to blow through."
Each patch of forest gets burned every few years
Foresters say some wildlife species actually benefit from these burns. They help promote plant growth, which is good for the animals that eat them.
