Strip club shut down after more than 90 nuisance calls
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - After more than 90 complaints, Thee Whiskey Tavern on Zimalcrest Drive is now closed.
The adult entertainment club was private and located behind the Hawthorn Suites hotel.
Authorities said over the course of three years' they've responded to multiple calls of aggravated assault, robberies, weapon law violations, liquor law violations and criminal sexual conduct.
In August a judge denied the club a new business license and ordered the owners to be out on November 3rd. The sheriff's department posted on Twitter Tuesday:
“Thee Whiskey Tavern had been a hotbed for criminal activity to include operating illegally as a sexually oriented business.”
Sergeant Curtis Wilson with the department said the club was a nuisance to the area. "Now it's an opportunity to say hey alright, lets rid the crime that's been going on in that particular area," Wilson said. "And then concentrate on other areas as well, because as you know, it's one of those things where we continue to try to reduce the fear of crime every single day."
This now adds to the list of clubs shut down by the department. In April deputies shut down Club Reveal on Two Notch Road after two men were ambushed in a gang-style shooting, leaving one of the men dead. The hotel denies any connections with the club.
