SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say they broke up a dogfighting ring in Sumter, busting the operation while two animals were fighting.

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis told The Item of Sumter that deputies went to the home Wednesday night after getting a complaint about dogs fighting.

Deputies say 20-year-old Andy Franklin was arrested at the scene, while several others ran or drove away. It wasn't clear if Franklin had an attorney.

Dennis says it was obvious the home had been used for dogfighting because bloody rags and medical supplies used to treat bite wounds were found. Skeletons of dogs also were found buried in the backyard.

The sheriff says it took officers 40 minutes to separate the two dogs that were fighting when officers arrived.(Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
