KERSHAW COUNTY,SC (WACH) The Kershaw County Sheriff TMs Office deputies have arrested a suspect for transporting prison contraband for the second time.
The suspect, 18-year-old Jonathan Hugo Gonzales, was arrested for speeding along I-20, on December 23, 2011.
On December 23, 2011 KCSO traffic officers were patrolling I-20 in Kershaw County when a deputy stopped a minivan for travelling 89 mph in a 70mph zone. After approaching the driver, Gonzalez, Lt. Myers recognized him from a previous traffic stop he made on Gonzalez in September 2011. During that traffic stop, a deputy discovered a considerable amount of tobacco and cell phones that had been prepared to be thrown over the fence at Lee Correctional Institute.
During this most recent traffic stop, an officer asked Gonzalez if he had any contraband with him. Gonzalez admitted that he did. He said he spent the day at a hotel near the Lee Correctional facility, waiting for an opportunity to throw this contraband over the fence. The presence of security personnel at the prison never allowed Gonzales the chance. Deputies seized 14 packages of tobacco wrapped in duct tape, 10 cell phones and 9 cell phone chargers.
Gonzalez was arrested for speeding and driving under suspension, the result of not paying his tickets from the September traffic violations.
