      Suspect named in Columbia kidnapping

Acting Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago says the department has outstanding warrants for James Murphy Brigman, Jr., 40, who is expected to be charged with kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime once he is arrested.

UPDATE: James Murphy Brigman was found dead in Calhoun County Wednesday afternoon.

COLUMBIA (WACH) - A suspect has been named in an abduction investigation that began after a woman was taken against her will Tuesday evening.

Acting Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago says the department has outstanding warrants for James Murphy Brigman, Jr., 40, who is expected to be charged with kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime once he is arrested.

Police say Brigman is accused of kidnapping a female acquaintance from the 200 block of Greystone Blvd. around 5 p.m. Tuesday night. Coworkers found some of the woman's belongings scattered in a parking lot and called police. The woman was located Tuesday night in Calhoun County and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators do not believe this was a random act.

Brigham, who was last seen driving a red, 2002 Chevy Colorado with South Carolina Tag IUP-375 and a large University of Georgia sticker, allegedly has a history of criminal domestic violence and harassment, according to authorities.
