The owner of an adult store in Columbia is suing the city, asking a judge to let it stay open past the end of the year.
The State of Columbia newspaper reports that the owner of Taboo is accusing the city is violating his free speech and other rights. Columbia has ordered the store to close on Dec. 31, but the lawsuit asks a judge to keep the store open while the lawsuit is pending.
The lawsuit says Taboo opened in December 2011 after owner Jeffrey White carefully researched zoning and license laws. White says the city then changed its ordinances a month later to try to ban the store.
City Councilwoman Leona Plaugh says she doesn't know how the city will respond, but thinks Columbia's decisions were legal.
