Teen charged with arson, admits he intentionally set fire at apartment complex
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH)-- The Columbia Police Department have arrested one 19-year-old in connection with an arson that occurred at The Hub early Tuesday morning.
Shortly before 3 a.m., police arrested Alexander Eugene Petrillo and charged him with third and second degree arson.
Initially firefighters responded to the scene for an active fire alarm on the eleventh floor of the apartment complex.
Residence self-evacuated for a short time as the Columbia Fire Department searched for signs of a fire.
Firefighters located remnants of a small fire from a piece of paper near the elevators on the second floor.
After the scene was under control, firefighters saw Petrillo set a stack of newspapers in the main lobby on fire.
Firefighters approached Petrillo, who was a resident at the Hub, and requested CPD arrive on the scene. As police questioned Petrillo, he admitted to intentionally started the fires.
Petrillo was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He is also expected to be charged with possession of schedule II controlled substance and possession of marijuana
There were no reported injuries or significant damages as a result of the fire.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is assisting CPD and CFD with the investigation.
All persons arrested/charged are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
