Teen dead after Newberry block party shooting

NEWBERRY, S.C. (WACH/AP) -- Deputies are investigating a shooting that left one person dead and another wounded in Newberry County.

Authorities say they were called to a large block party in Prosperity early Sunday morning because of traffic congestion and noise.

Deputies say Rikard School Road was completely blocked when they arrived. Authorities estimate there were more than 100 people at the party.

Shots were fired, and people started running from the scene. Authorities say they found one person on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head.

Coroner Craig Newton says 19-year-old Zemeckis Monteco Devante Houston died on the scene.

"Someone's life was lost during this party," said Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster. "If this were your loved one, you would want someone to do the right thing and come forward so the perpetrator can be brought to justice."

Another person was taken to the hospital for injuries. Authorities are still investigating.
