BLYTHEWOOD, SC (WACH) - A teen found carrying a gun on school grounds at a Midlands high school has been arrested.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says a 16-year-old male is charged with larceny, weapons violation, carrying a weapon on school grounds, possessing a weapon under age 18 and possession of a stolen weapon.
According to Lott, the teen was interviewed and investigators have determined he had no intent of any kind to harm anyone at the school.
Deputies responding to a larceny call around 7:45 a.m. Monday on Hawkins Creek Road were informed by the victim that a Hi Point handgun was missing from his gun box and the latch had been broken, Lott said. The victim said his daughter had several friends from Westwood High School over to the home. A list of the friends was compiled.
Authorities say the School Resource Officer and school staff were alerted. The gun was quickly located and the student was arrested.
Lott says the teen's particular circumstances require him to carry all of his possessions with him daily, which allowed deputies to locate the gun in his belongings.
The teen was taken to Columbia for detention hearing in family court.
