      The Great Good Day Columbia Mac Off

      Chef Gary won the 2012 Good Day Columbia Mac Off!

      COLUMBIA S.C. (WACH) ?? The Great Good Day Columbia Mac Off is in the record books, as 5 local mega mac makers competed for a crown, trophy, and bragging rights to the best mac in the Midlands.

      Based on a challenge thrown down by Chef Gary Uwanawhich, the Good Day team put together the field of talented cookers, including GDC??s own Janet Parker, WACH Fox reporter Shyann Malone, Chef Fatback from Mac??s on Main, and Anderson Chambers from Travina Italian Kitchen, and put them to the test.

      The chef??s shared some secrets put their mac to the testing taste buds of Good Day??s Tyler Ryan, Fraendy Clervaud, Alexis King and Ivory Hecker.

      In the end, and perhaps quite fittingly, it was Chef Gary??s mac that took the crown?|litteraly?|

      Here are the recipies, should you crave the great mac at home:

      The Ultimate Mac & Cheese

      Inspired Recipe

      What you will need

      1 16 oz box shells pasta

      1 Jar afredado sauce (I like bertoli)

      1 small pack of cream cheese

      2 tablespoons butter

      1 pack shredded cheddar cheese

      1 pack shredded mozzarella cheese

      2 cups whole milk

      2 eggs

      Salt and pepper to taste

      How to make it Fill large pot with water about 2 inches from the top add in 2 tablespoons salt and bring to a boil add in pasta cook for about 8 min or until pasta is tender but not mushy drain pasta do not rinse place pasta in a baking pan or casserole dish wile pasta is hot add in butter, cream cheese, 1/2 of the cheddar and 1/2 of the mozzarella mix well add in Alfredado sauce mix well in a bowl whisk the eggs and milk pour mixture over pasta give a quick stir top with rest of cheese bake in preheated oven 350 for about 45 min or until golden hot and bubbly remove from oven let stand for 15 min before serving and enjoy

      Chef Fatback??s Viola??s Macaroni & Cheese

      Preface: The last thing Mom taught me a week before she died was her mac and cheese recipe. I remember going away to college and my roommate broke out a box of instant mac & cheese. He told me that was the standard at his house. I brought him some of my Mom??s Mac & Cheese and he went crazy.

      1 Lbs of Dry Macaroni noodles

      5 eggs

      2 cups milk or evaporated milk

      2 cup Sharp shredded cheese

      1 cup Mild shredded cheese

      4 teaspoons of Salt

      Prepare Macaroni noodles as directed by box. When complete drain the noodles and pour in a deep pot or mixing bowl. I always saw my Mom use a deep pot. Combine 5 eggs scrambled, milk and pour over the noodles. Add salt and both cheeses to the noodles in the pot, save 1/2 cup of cheese for the top. Pour mixture in a casserole dish or deep baking pan. Top with left over cheese and bake @ 350F for 50 minutes or until internal temperature gets to 170F. Check the middle of casserole dish for firmness and temperature when done remove from oven and let stand for 30 minutes.

      Magic Mike??s Mac n?? cheese

      1lb ELBOW MACARONI

      2 CUP OF WHITE CHEDDAR

      1/2 CUP OF CHEDDAR

      1/2 CUP PARMESEAN CHEESE

      2 CUPS MILK

      4 TABLESPOONS OF BUTTER

      1 TABLESPOON OF FLOUR

      1/4 TEASPOON SALT

      1/4 TEASPOON PEPPER

      Boil macaroni as directed on package.

      In a medium saucepan melt butter. Add flour and whisk 2-3 minutes.

      Slowly add milk and let simmer to get thick.

      Stir in cheeses. Add salt and pepper to taste.

      Stir in noodles.

      Bake at 350 degrees for about 30-40 minutes.

      The Travinia Gouda Mac Experience

      Gouda Sauce

      Cavatappi Pasta

      Pancetta

      Italian bread crumbs

      Shreaded gouda cheese

      Mix and heat gouda sauce, cavatappi pasta and pancetta in sauce pan. Pour into casserole dish. Top with Italian bread cumbs and shreaded gouda cheese. Finish under broiler.

      Momma Janet??s Mac n Cheese

      1/2 pound elbow macaroni

      1/2 cup evaporated milk

      1/2 cup 2% milk

      4 cups of cheese (of your choice)

      3tbsp of butter

      2 eggs

      Onion Powder

      Pepper

      Salt

      Parmesan Powder

      1 regular size bag of bacon bits

      Preheat oven at 350.

      Boil water, season water to taste (salt, pepper, etc)

      Once water is boiled add macaroni and return to boil until noodles are tender.

      Drain noodles.

      Rinse once with warm water and drain.

      Pour in mixing bowl and add butter.

      In separate bowl whisk eggs, milk, seasonings

      Add mixture to bowl and mix in cheese.

      (be sure to leave enough to cover the top of your dish before it goes in the oven)

      Once all is mixed WELL, pour into baking/lasagna pan

      Cover top with remaining cheese

      Place into oven and let bake 30-35 minutes until top turns golden brown.

      Let stand for about 5-10 minutes and ENJOY!!!
