COLUMBIA (WACH) - Diabetes awareness was the theme of the day for many Midlands walkers on Sunday.
About 3,000 walkers came out the 22nd Annual JDRF Walk to cure diabetes, raising money and awareness. Walkers began near the Colonial Life Arena and walk all around the USC campus.
The money raised will go towards research for the disease and hopefully a cure.
Millions are affected each year; and JDRF Executive Director Dana Bruce said South Carolina is one of the states in the country for diabetes. She said that needs to change.
"It can strike at any time at any age," Bruce said. "There is no cure and insulin is only life support. It is very important for us to bring awareness to this disease and how important a cure is," said Bruce.
WACH Chief Meteorologist Henry Rothenberg was there to announce the event. There were also several vendors and other activities for people of all ages.
